cause
is a strain. This is the overuse or misuse of the back muscles
resulting
in temporary soreness. This should resolve itself in a few
days.
Back pain could have a very serious underlying cause and any
back pain lasting more than a few days or recurring back pain
should be evaluated by a chiropractor. In some cases the spinal
specialist will refer you to a neurosurgeon or orthopedic surgeon
for surgical consultation.
After a careful history and general examination the spinal specialist
will perform an orthopedic and neurological examination. Most
specialists will then take a series of x-rays. After consideration
of the
findings most doctors can make a working diagnosis and prescribe
treatment.
Also a common diagnosis and cause of back pain is the segmental
dysfunction or spinal subluxation complex. This is the misalignment
and fixations of the spine as the result of injury, insult, poor
posture, use, abuse, lack of proper exercise and many other causes.
This condition often affects the nervous system and can have
far reaching, painful and serious consequences. Untreated this
condition will lead to increased degeneration of the spine and
other body structures.
Often the spinal specialist may order blood tests and more sophisticated
high tech diagnostic procedures. Patients who have certain symptoms,
examination findings, worsen with time, or who have not responded
to treatment after a reasonable time may require further evaluation
using the many other diagnostic procedures available (i.e. MRI,
CAT scan, Myelogram, Discogram and other tests). Most spinal conditions
require physical rehabilitation. Along with your doctors treatment
you should have a prescribed set
of exercises and Simple Slant should be a part of your rehab
program.
